btw: I forgot to mention that i bought one of those hybrid disk this summer (half SSD and half normal drive)
I cant really tell how the difference was for two reasons:
1: at same time i changed from Server2003 to Win7, so hard to compare on that
2: the disk takes some time to "learn" your habbits (most used proggys to get t he best speed out of it)

anyway its faster than a normal drive, but slower than a real SSD, but its also cheaper than a SSD
I cant really say if its a good buy, but it gives you something more for the money than a normal HD(speed) and SSD(size)

Afternote: the worst thing about buying the disk was its soooo small looking inside my tower cabinet
(it real dont fit in a normal HD compartment LOL )

Ok, i got the Vertex 2 120Gb.
Installed it in my laptop and it works great. It didn't really boost the boot-time (or at least i don't notice it), It does make a big difference when I return from hibernate.
But the thing I love most is Photoshop starting in 5 seconds and anything of Office 2010 within a second...

It works for all SSD's and basically it disables all the windows services which you don't need anymore and boosts the performance.

OCZ Vertex 2 u say ! the Standard, EX or PRO series ?
anyway they(all) have a good write speed which the failing point for the cheap SSD disks ! and if u choose the size between 50-240gigs u get the best spec.

its for sure a good disk..... the price seems okay too, compared to Corsair SSD Force which also would be an okay buy

I want this SSD for my work laptop, so I don't need loads of space to store games or movies on. I just need my windows and all my applications load up fast. Then I use the laptop mostly on the battery in the time I'm in the train (and that is a long time nowadays with all this snow). Now my laptop runs 10+ hours on a full battery, but It never can be enough
So these are the reasons I was to use one, currently my laptop has a 160Gb 5400 rpm HD, which is just too slow

I'm reading all these forums and I seem to end up most of the time with an OCZ Vertex 2, which seems to be the most used. I'm gone research more before I buy, ill keep you posted.

@Kof: I think he will !! an bottleneck in most laptops are the HD !! most comes with a 5400rpm, even getting 7400rpm u can feel !! (learned by doing ) so a SSD should be a "upgrade"
and if for nothing else..... better battery life

Just get a big HD and use that.

2 hard drives?? why not just get a fast monster drive and not worry about anything....

@Star: yups i know !! but for sure check the specs on the R/W, and i would not do as Snoop recommend !! lots of ppl say great disk coz its faster than what they are used to !!
Specs read Specs before buy !!

you could find a few disks that u find good, and then post them here and get others "opinion" on the selections
but first:
decide min size of disk
decide max price u wanna pay
this will remove a good part of the list of disk out there

Have u thought about having 2 disks
1 fast SSD disk for system and most used proggys
1 large SATS disk for data and less used proggys
this will make u able to find a smaller SSD disk with better specs without getting ripped for your money

*EDIT: Doh read your post again... it was for the laptop, forget the thing about 2 disks

just go to newegg and buy the one that has the best reviews

Bringing up an old topic, but i too got lost in the SSD maze.
I'm looking for an 120-128 Gb SSD for my laptop (so 2.5") for around 200 euro ($ 260,-) but I'm lost.
As i read here this Intel X25-M should be good, but it shows 250/70 Mb/s which isnt too good if you compare it to the other drives out there.
Now I know these things are all measured differently throughout the different brands so what to look for and what is recommended?
Basically... HELP!!!
