yea, not very accurate at long range....i just want one to shoot for fun, im not planning on getting into a gun fight with it.

but what grains do you use in your .308's Heggis?
I personal (as marksman shooter) prefer the 168 grains since it has a okay recoil and still able to get you a good precision. in the 3-400m range
when i have to shoot high winds i pref the 190grains but the after a good day with those i need to rest on the sofa.
when it comes to the brand, im more to Norma than Lapua in 308's
but lapua are the pref in small bore riffles.
I did a lot of shooting with some 145grains special loaded for the danish police, and they worked fine...... in no wind, but out of the box of 20 i always had one bad cartridge so i stopped using them.

PS: nice 2 c some have some qualified thoughts when it comes to the subject... not just, "the bigger the better" say

Every time I take my Saiga to the range I hear someone whining. But I guess it's ok since he's only jealous.

Now to the point:
From a sport shooters point of view it isn't the best choise for anything. It's not that accurate, Recoil(can be redused with a buffer & adjustable gas block(perhaps little lightening of slide, gas piston & bolt)) doesn't make it easy to shoot fast & trigger is very heavy & "stretchable"(That can be easily fixed though & only the heavy stays(for heavy one needs to dremel a little)). Even though you can make a decent & cheap project for yourself, It's never as good as AR-15 or -10.

From a recreation shooters point of view it's fun to shoot every now & then. Action shooting most of all, since the guns "spirit" is just for that.

From a military shooter point of view it's a damn good weapon for tough enviroment where visibility is not that good & firing ranges stay under 100-150 yds. Very heavy slide & powerful recoil spring combined with well desing cartrige(for automatic weapons) makes it quite jam-free. Ballistics of the bullet are good for that kind of ranges & you can also shoot a target behind a tree much thicker that .223 rem ever could. Accuracy for this is good enough.

From hunters point of view it's - everything from a fox to deer will fall with this one, but there are better options available.

Now, at this point I would like to point out that even though the cartridge is labelled as 7.62x39 one must remember that it's russian 7.62. Unlike 7.62 NATO(.308 Win) it doesn't use 7.82 bullets but 7.88-7.92(depending on source & bullet). I recommend Sako 117A bullets with Lapua shells for reloading. With these components & my saiga(iron sights) I have shot little less than 10 cm / 150 meters ~ 2 MOA. With good AR & optics good shooter gets less than 5 cm / 300 meters. I haven't still tested the true accuracy of Saiga with a scope but I think I can do better than 2 MOA then.

We had couple of days of rabbit/fox hunting so that wabbit picture was from one of them. You can see one of the shotguns leaning the car in the dog picture

That rabbit moment was just too fast to get to the guns and I had camera in my hands so all I did was shoot. Those dogs are Russian Hounds if someone wants to know... The left ones name is Elmo (which is close to Elmer

We got 2 small-mediocre sized females. On both of them bodyweight was about 120kg (265 lbs). Head was big, body not. I guess tells something about females *cough*
